Statistics are vital, but more so being able to see and understand various features and their connectedness, and being able to explain it. The human element in machine learning is what is so exciting to me. Being able to filter the noise from large data, and extract key information, allows us insights into previously complex relationships.
My Bachelor of Arts degree offers a different perspective on data, interpretation and communicating the findings. My tertiary studies have placed great emphasis on critical thinking, ethics and effective communication. Understanding not only the value of the sources of information, but richness, can add to the interpretation.
How I keep my skills sharp
The skills I develop are to benefit not only myself and my immediate surroundings, but also for the benefit of society.
Currently, I am part of a project that is making available information to assist victims of abuse. I started with data cleaning, but ended up learning web-scraping (dynamic and static webpages). I now understand the difficulties of remote teamwork collaboration, communication and time management.
As a Raspberry Pi hobbyist, I use Python as my main coding language. I try to implement any new or interesting skills recently acquired into a fun project.
The last project involved learning basic electronics, basic web development and using APIs. Using environment sensors, I served a dashboard with the current temperature and humidity, and the historic trend. next: predict the next three days internal temperature.
What I’m looking to do next
We are only scratching the surface with what we can do with data. It was a natural step to use data science in finance, but we can unlock more potential and value in all areas.
I am keen to work on projects that not only provide insights but add value. I am willing to learn new technology and skill up. I am a team player that would like to work on a team with experience with which to learn from.
